Get over it

Today I got into another battle within my head.  Part of the WOD was box jump-overs.  I could do it fine on the tiny box.  I could even do it no problems on the tiny box with weight plates stacked up making it higher than the box I needed to clear for the WOD.  But even after an intense stare-down, I could NOT get my head to commit to even trying the bigger box.  Like at all.  There must have been smoke coming out of my ears I was so frustrated.

My pull-ups are not getting better.  I practice them religiously 2-3 times a week after the WOD.  I have had days where I can get through with a thinner band helping me out, but some days they go the opposite way too.  I’m not giving up 😉  I just am ready to see some progress… please?

Ok, done complaining. I try to be a “glass half full” kind of person, but I have my days.  Who doesn’t?  Day off from work today.  Like, not even one of the days I’m off from my full-time job, but working at the part-time one.  Today is legit.  Thank gawd today was not a rest day!  Gave me something to look forward to 🙂  The WOD was a full one, with many parts:

warm-up in pairs

A runs up the hill twice   B jumping jacks   ~ then switch

A runs up the hill twice   B push-ups   ~ then switch

then

Every 30 seconds for 3 minutes complete – 2 burpees, 2 box jumps

then

AMRAP in 10 Minutes:
6- Chest-to-Bar Pull-Ups   green band
12- Box Jump Overs (20”)  scaled this business – jump up, jump down on other side.  total chicken today.

Rest 1 Minute then:

AMRAP (Reps) in 2 minutes:
Hand Release Push-Ups   completed 48.  then died.  almost.

I didn’t cry today.  Tuesday we just weird.  There’s no crying in baseball…  Back to our heavy lifting tomorrow 😀  Yee!  Better eat lots today…

Oh! i found exactly what I want for Christmas!  Except there’s no chance I’ll be able to wait that long….

What?!  I can make “noodles” out of sweet potato?  Brilliant 😀 Thanks to Juli B at paleOMG.com I found THIS site!  I was Inspiralized. Pretty amazing and totally delicious sounding… check it out!  After playing my usual game of “catch-up” including some cooking, cleaning and laundry… I decided to go out for a little more double unders practice. It was gorgeous out today, so why not 😉  Believe it or not, it was actually a successful effort 🙂

image** Note… the tattoo symbolizes “strength & energy”.  If you can read whatever language it is in and it actually means “you fool”, please keep that information to yourself 😉  In my mind it’s a simple reminder.  These two things relate to one of my biggest fears… that MS will strip me of them one day.  I won’t go down without a fight :p

Random rant

So check this out – today is my rest day, so you can pretty much expect this post to have absolutely no structure or sense of direction.  Here we go…

Lets have a round of my new little game “is it weird?”

– Is it weird that I dreamt of double unders last night?  Not just my usual whip-lashing mixed with shining moments, but REAL rounds of unbroken double under perfection!  When I woke up this morning at 4:15 (no, that’s not weird.  I’m over it.  Some days I just can’t help it… I have tried my usual tricks to coax my self back into dreamland, but nothing seems to work) anyways… back to my double unders.  When I woke up this morning, I was pumped!  So I had to try to see if maybe the dream would transfer over to real life.  In the dark.  At 4am.  And…  it didn’t.  Sigh.

– Kind of a “part B” of the first one…  Is it weird that I opted for a sports bra for work today so I could practice the stupid things during slow moments?  That’s right.  I have a problem.

Rest day = cooking day. I made a batch of mini meatloaf, almond bread and pumpkin granola all before 9am.  My problem when I get on a cooking binge is I forget to eat. Drank plenty of coffee and water, but when I initially considered that it wouldn’t be very nice of me to run the good ‘ole magic bullet at 5 to make my greens breakfast drink, I just sort of forgot until 9ish :p oops!  You’re welcome neighbours.

Back to the box tomorrow. Back to my “normal”.

the sky is falling?

Actually, my first though was that the guy working out beside me was throwing chalk.  Then came the moment of “is the sky really falling??” panic.  But I didn’t let it break my concentration as I was more than half way through my set of 18 thrusters and did NOT want to stop!  The truth of the matter was not nearly as exciting as either of those scenarios.  Apparently I managed to catch my necklace in the bottom part of one of these thrusters and beads went everywhere.  I did manage to catch a good 20 or so in my bra though, cause when I went to jump in the shower, beads hit the floor once again.  Brilliant.  On the bright side, the necklace was one purchased on a trip to the Dominican, so I’m going to see it as a sign that I will have to go back again.  😀  On a morning when I was not overly impressed to walk out of my apartment to realize it was cold enough I could see my breath, the Caribbean concept was a welcome one for sure.

091713 wodThis sucked.  Large.  But I didn’t die, and tomorrow will definitely be a well-deserved rest day.  I anticipated the row to be a bit of a breather…  WRONG.  The first one had me fighting with everything I had in me to not burst into tears :p  Today was the day my body said “Hey you!!  ‘EFF OFF!!!”  But I pushed through it and finished the whole pile of suck in 11:37.  Not first, but not last either.  Left in all on the floor in this one, or in the parking lot for the sprints at the end.  As usual, it felt good when it was over.  Plus I went home to this awesomeness:

she squats bro

Trust me, the butt that no longer fits into my jeans is proof that this post title is the truth.  Winter is coming… no more shorts for this kid (other than for working out).  Thank gawd for yoga pants and sweats.  Also thankfully I live in a University town where this type of casual attire is more than acceptable…

I’m going to make excuses for a moment, bear with me…  I wanted to post yesterday after a great WOD, but I have a new employee that I’m still ironing out at work, so the opportunity to blog secretly in my office just didn’t present itself :p also, my dear MacBook seems to have really slowed in its ripe old age…  like, the little rainbow “I’m thinking…” wheel has been spinning for the last 5 minutes.  SO I must suck it up and blog from my iPad.  Poor me (not), I know.  But typing on a screen is just not the same.

Ok, I’m done 🙂 Yesterday was the start of week two of our “Build a bigger can” phase.  Much discussion came about that title again yesterday when the 7:30 class was an all female group.  I mean, we all trust our coach and believe in his methods, but I tried my bet to explain to him that a bigger can only appealed to him cause “you’re a DUDE!”  Ah well, still not sure he gets what I’m throwin’ down, but I’m still happy with my workout 🙂 AND progress since last week!  Yesterday on the menu:

Back Squats: 9-9-9-9     #95 
Push Presss: 9-9-9-9     #65
Pull-ups (Strict + weighted if BW is too easy): 9-9-9-9   green banded it again, but no mixed grip this time

*Add #15-20# for Squats/Deadlifts, #5-15# for all Presses from last week*

After completing the big 3 – pick two of the following: Do 4 sets
of 8-15, based upon load and feel.

Reverse Hypers
Sit-ups
Plank Holds (4×30 Seconds) — went for 5 rounds of these, first 4 w/ #25 & last w/ #35 plate

Happy kid 🙂  My front squats were up #20 from last monday and my push press was up #10.  Both were HARD, but I survived.  The girl next to me killed it.  Her bar looked kinda the same as mine… ‘cept for the extra #25 plate on each side!!  One day I’ll be that guy 😉 lol  These workouts are funny to watch coach wander around a bit lost with what to do with himself.  Most days, his energy is used to rev us all up and provide motivation/encouragement.  In a WOD that’s not met con at all and actually has rest breaks between each set, there’s plenty of time for random conversation.  A little mental stimuli between the physical 🙂

Today has a large helping of toes-to-bar.  I don’t like those.  Or maybe they don’t like me?  Not sure but I’m going anyway…  It’s the one’s that make you want to crawl back under the covers that you need the most, right?  We’ll see 😉

go for broke?

I keep telling myself – Stop being lazy!  Write about yesterday already!  What’s my “excuse” I keep coming up with?  I’m tired.  :p  But as Dave always says… “Sleep is the new broke.”  Get UP, get MOVING.  At least I DID get my butt to the box this morning 😀  After taking Friday off to give my body the rest I anticipated it would need for yesterday, then taking yesterday off from the box again to do a different kind of crossfit, Badass Dash style, I was revved up to get back at it again today.

Badass Dash, last of the mud runs for this kid in 2013.  I have somewhat mixed feelings about it too.  I don’t do cold.  If you are of the belief that we “choose” our parents, etc before birth, I don’t agree.  I don’t know how I could ever have chosen birth into a country that experiences cold winters.  It didn’t snow or anything crazy on Saturday, but when you are competing in an obstacle race that involves getting sprayed with water very early on, and again repeatedly every time your clothes start to dry off slightly and the shivering subsides, it better be toasty out.  Thankfully the sun was out, but I still froze my a** off.  Unfortunately for my poor running partner, who was attempting this sort of badass for the first time, she rolled her ankle early on in the race.  After that, we walked.  For 2 hours.  Wet.  On a brighter note, the obstacles in this race were mostly awesome.  🙂  30 in total, although I don’t consider the “15 push-ups” after running up the ski hill, down the ski hill, then up again, an obstacle.  Or the “5 somersaults or rolls”.  So, lets say 28 obstacles, k?  And we survived 🙂

badassdash 7Back in the box this morning!  🙂  A fun met con (I think… still haven’t asked what exactly the term means, but there were no squats, so I’m going to roll with it)

WOD:

Death by Rowing: 100m-200m-300m-400m-500m… Etc..
Death by Burpees: 10-15-20-25-30… Etc
Death by Wallballs: 15-20-25-30-35-40… Etc
**Increase Reps/Meters every 3 Minutes until unable to achieve number or distance**

I was in “group 2”, so we actually started with burpees, then wallballs, then rowing.  Made it through 6 rounds of burpees (last round 35), 5 rounds of wallballs (last round 35) and 3 rounds of rowing (200m, 400m, 600m).  Could have gone farther on each, but I had to work at 11:00, so everything had to fit in an hour 😉

Once again, feels like I could eat a hippo.

MjAxMi05NTczNGE2YTFmM2NhN2E4[1]Yup.  That pretty much sums it up.  So much so that I opted OUT of my favourite class of the week this morning.  As much as it hurts my brain to do so, I think I made the right choice.  Today on the menu was front squats, strict press and back squats.  All at 80%.  After already putting in two squat days this week, and all the snatch yesterday, I figured it may be in my best interest to take a pass on today’s WOD.  All the skipping yesterday has my shins absolutely screaming bloody murder, and I have the 7kms of hill running and obstacles to look forward to tomorrow.  The same Mon/Wed/Fri routine will be around for the next 8 weeks.  I will get many opportunities to subject myself to this kind of sadistic awesomeness in the weeks to come.  🙂

I did make a wicked awesome spaghetti squash casserole in my extra hours this morning before work though 🙂  May not have gone to the box, but I’d be damned if my natural 5:30 am wake up was going to go to waste.   mmmm… heaven!  Other than the tomato sauce, all of the contents were fresh from my trip to St. Jacob’s farmer’s market yesterday 🙂
